When we think of Valentine's Day, we often think of red roses, chocolates in heart- shaped boxes, and Cupid flying around shooting arrows at dreamy-eyed lovers. But there are very few who know how the Day originated.
History of Valentine’s Day
Valentine's Day is named after Saint Valentine, a Catholic priest who lived in Rome in the 3rd Century. There are several legends about St. Valentine, but the most popular one claims that St. Valentine performed secret, forbidden marriages for young lovers in ancient Rome. Evidently, Emperor Claudius II thought single, childless men made better soldiers, so he made it illegal for young men to marry. St. Valentine ignored this decree, and as the legend goes, was eventually put to death for it.
